Spelling / Vocabulary Games


When your kids are burnt out on textbooks and workbooks, break out the games! Even games designed for older kids can be modified for younger ones, and you can turn any game into something educational with a little creative thinking! Here are some games we found that help kids practice their spelling.

Spill and Spell

Spill & Spell Spill and Spell is a fast-moving spelling game for any number of players.  Special rules are included for new spellers.  If your children are at different levels, instead of competing against each other, have them keep their own scores and try to beat their own records.  Ages 8 and up.


Tri-Words Spelling GameTri-Words is a fast-paced game that packs a world of colorful, word-powered fun inside its compact tin case. With a timer, special die, and 30 tricolor tiles, it's got everything you need for word building fun. And it's easy to play. Each player draws 5 to 8 Tri-Tiles from the pile. Throw the Tri-Die to determine how many words to make from your tiles and the color that will give you the most points. UpwordsUpwords is a 3-dimensional word building Scrabble game that can be played as a group or solo.  Stack letters on top of other letters to form new words.  Upwords also makes a great game for practicing word families with younger children. Ages 8 and up.

What's Gnu

What's Gnu Word Building GameA great way for younger players to practice their word recognition and spelling skills, What's Gnu is a fun confidence-builder. Players slide the “Letter Getter” forward to reveal two letter tiles, and then use them to create three-letter words by filling in the blanks on their Word-Starter cards. The player who spells the greatest number of words wins. Ages 5 and up.

Word Shout

Word Yahtzee

Word Yahtzee An oldie-but-goodie!  Like Yahtzee only you're making words.  Unfortunately, this game is no longer being manufactured, but if you're lucky enough to find it at a yard sale, on Amazon,  or on eBay, it's a great word building game.  (And adding all those points makes it a math game, too!)
